Milk Chocolate - The American All Time Favorite Flavor

Milk chocolate is the preferred chocolate flavor in the United States. According to regulations by the FDA in the United States, there must be a 10% concentration of chocolate liquor used in milk chocolates.  In Europe 25% chocolate liquor is the minimum amount of cocoa solids required in manufacturing milk chocolates. This leads to a difference in the chocolate types, flavors and taste between European and American chocolates.  Milk chocolate can be combined with other ingredients such as mint, nuts, and fruits and the list goes on! Some of the most popular mass produced milk chocolate candy bars include Snickers, Reese’s, Kit Kat, Hershey, Butterfinger, to name a few.

Milk chocolate contains pure cocoa liquor with extra cocoa butter, sugar and milk solids. It contains more milk than chocolate liquor which gives a softer chocolate flavor to it. Dark chocolate type, on the other hand, has a greater chocolate liquor level.  High quality, gourmet milk chocolate will have a higher percentage of chocolate liquor mixed with pure ingredients and leave out artificial flavoring that mass production companies may use. It is common in the U.S. for milk chocolate to contain a milk and sugar mixture while in Europe milk chocolate manufacturers use condensed milk. Condensed milk is made from cow’s milk from which water is removed and sugar is added. This process results in a thick, sweet milk that has a longer shelf life without refrigeration as long as it remains unopened.

Today you can get your milk chocolate in countless varieties but most of the earlier ones that were most popular were plain chocolate such as the classic Hershey’s bar. Subsequently, milk chocolate is mixed with other ingredients to create other varieties. These include:

  • different kinds of nuts such as peanuts, almonds and macadamia
  • caramel
  • chocolate fudge and syrup
  • mint or peppermint
  • dried fruits such as raisins, blueberries and orange
  • peanut butter
  • wafer
  • nougat

These added ingredients are found in several of the most popular milk chocolate candy bars across the globe. These include:

  • Snickers - rated as the most popular chocolate bar for several years running and contains peanut butter flavored nougat, caramel, roasted peanuts and covered with milk chocolate
  • Butterfinger - contains a flaky orange and peanut butter flavored center and covered with chocolate
  • Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups - While not technically a candy bar, they do rate high!  Each one contains creamy peanut butter covered with rich milk chocolate
  • Baby Ruth - a chocolate covered bar filled with fudge nougat and peanuts
  • Kit Kat - crispy cream-filled wafer cookies covered in Hershey’s chocolate

Milk chocolate whether plain or with added ingredients and flavors remains the all time favorite chocolate type! In candy bars, chocolate candies or any other chocolate form it rules in popularity.   Whether you choose off the shelf at your local grocery store or delicious gourmet chocolates, a milk chocolate treat is sure to bring a smile of delight!
