Chocolate history is filled with little known facts! It is truly an amazing journey that this favorite sweet has taken. In looking through some of the history of chocolate I found a few that I thought I would pass on today!
In the early days of chocolate’s history the ancient Mayans used chocolate as a ceremonial drink for weddings, engagements, baptisms and other ceremonies. They considered chocolate as a sacred gift from their gods. The bitter beverage was included in many of the major rites and rituals.
During the 16th and 17th centuries, the church considered eating chocolates to be a sin. The church was responsible for looking after people’s health during this time.
In the 18th century, chocolates were used as medicine. It was used to treat stomach aches and other ailments. While I am not sure how much it would help the ailment I know that I certainly would like, and most children would certainly like, taking that form of medicine!
