Have you ever wondered how Easter, a traditional Christian holiday, became associated with the Easter Bunny and Easter eggs? Well, so did we and we found an answer.
In early Christianity, the Church wanted to welcome converts from what were known as pagan cultures. The druids gave us the Christmas Tree, etc. Well, Easter, which celebrates Jesus’ resurrection, occurs in Spring at the end of Lent. Anglo Saxons had a holiday which took place in the Spring celebrating the goddess Eastre. She was the goddess of fertility and springtime and her earthly symbol was the rabbit.
When the Anglo Saxons converted to Christianity, the holiday worshiping Eastre was merged into the Christian celebration and the holiday became known, as time went on, as Easter.
Eggs are much more straightforward. Eggs are seen as the origin of new life and throughout history have been exchanged, often in the spring, as gifts surrounding new life. These eggs were often hardboiled and decoratively painted, thus leading to the tradition today of finely painted eggs. So just as the Easter holiday (the Christian version) is celebrating conquering death and restoring life, so the egg is associated with this incredible holiday.
So there you have it, the origins of Easter eggs and the Easter Bunny!
